hen
it comes to mountain living, Fontana Lake Estates gives you the
best of two worlds – a secluded North
Carolina private gated community located in the middle of the vast
Smoky Mountains playground. Residents have direct access to the
Great Smoky Mountain Expressway (US Highway 74), a four-lane highway
connector to interstate highways. With the location's
close proximity to many large cities, part time residents can easily
come and get away for the weekend. The moderate climate enables
residents to enjoy mountain living year round.
On
the local front, Bryson
City serves as headquarters for the Great
Smoky Mountain Railroad, a restored passenger train providing
scenic excursions into the surrounding areas. Plays and performances
at the Swain
County Center for the Arts and the Smoky
Mountain Community Theatre run throughout the year. During
the summer, various musicians give free performances at Riverfront
Park. The town also features shopping for books, gifts and antiques.
There's a model
train museum, and golfing is available through the Smoky Mountain
Country Club and at courses in Franklin and Waynesville.
For the crafts enthusiasts, Dillsboro is
only about 20 miles away. Here you can shop for crafts at a myriad
of shops and watch craftsman such as weavers or potters ply their
trades. Downtown Waynesville also
supports a crafts community. John
C. Campbell Folk School, a short trip away, offers courses in
a variety of craft pursuits or you can admire craft displays.
Good day trips include
visits to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – about
90 minutes away. Gatlinburg also hosts a brand new aquarium.
Asheville, only 60 minutes away, is home to the Biltmore
House which attracts visitors from around the world. Nearby Western
Carolina University offers NCAA
sports and hosts various cultural exhibits. Families and outdoor
adventurers will find lots to do in the surrounding Smoky and Blue
Ridge Mountains.
